In the first
blog in this series I Introduced readers to the way I bring my characters to
life in my mind. I create very complete back-stories for each, so that they
always act in a way consistent with their past experiences. Back-story is only touched on in the book, but
it informs the way each character reacts in specific situations. Here is the back-story I created for my hero.
Adamo de Leone
Adamo spent much
of his childhood in Italy and speaks fluent Italian. His mother was American,
his father, Italian.
What does Adamo
look like? Think a cross between Rufus Sewell and Richard Gere. Adamo is dark skinned and has warm brown
eyes. He dresses casually and always wears dark sun glasses. He exudes a sense
of being in charge, of self-possession.
Adamo marries
right out of college. A beautiful woman who is a mistake.
While still young he and a friend go into business together and are soon making more money than they ever dreamed of. He has a beach house on Long Island and a condo in New York City. His life is spent on golf courses and in country clubs.
Then his world
comes tumbling down.
At 42, five
years in prison have aged him. His face is unlined but his short curly hair is
prematurely silver. His body has benefited by the prison regime. He’s tall and
well-muscled, physically strong. His good looks belie his tortured inner-self.
He has no money,
no job, and no future.
