My Review of 'Venice in the Moonlight' by Elizabeth McKenna

Venice in the MoonlightVenice in the Moonlight by Elizabeth McKenna
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story of a young woman artist in eighteenth century Venice is entertaining and has some unusual twists, as for instance in the hero, who is blind. The pacing is fast moving and the characters are interesting. The plot — well, devil worshiping seems a bit out of place in this setting and at this time -- but hey, it’s fiction. The heroine, who is as often dressed in her father’s clothes as in dresses, is engaging.

All in all, a quick and entertaining read. If I have any quibble it is that writers shouldn’t set books in locales they’ve visited only on Google. But perhaps I’m being unjust. It’s only that it is clear Venice is not a city with which McKenna is intimately familiar. And as a lover of that venerable city, I find certain discrepancies annoying. Still if you want moonlight and romance in 18th Century Venice during Carnival, here’s your chance.
